President Obama is planning to celebrate Presidents’ Day with some rest and relaxation in the Sunshine State.
On the heels of a three-state tour to promote the agenda items mentioned in his State of the Union address, Obama on Friday evening will head to West Palm Beach, where he’s expected to spend the weekend “relaxing with some friends,” according to White House Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest.
“There’s no work on the schedule,” Earnest told reporters Thursday aboard Air Force One.
What might be on the schedule: golf. The White House has booked some time for Obama at the Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, according to TCPalm.com, which cited three local sources.
The owner of the private golf course, Jim Crane, donated $35,800 to the Obama campaign and $30,800 to the Democratic National Committee in 2012, TCPalm reported.
Asked Thursday whether it’s bad optics for the president to spend a holiday weekend in a part of Florida known for its high-dollar donors, Earnest dismissed the question.
“As we’ve discussed, the president of the United States is the president of the United States 24 hours a day, and will fulfill his responsibilities as president even while he’s getting some well-deserved downtime with some friends this weekend,” Earnest said. “I don’t think the American people will begrudge him that.”
