Rep. John Kline won’t challenge Franken

April 19, 2013

Rep. John Kline (R-Minn.), who had left open the possibility of challenging Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) in 2014, said Friday that he will instead be running for reelection in 2014.

"I'm not running for Senate, and I'm not running for governor," Kline told Minnesota Public Radio. "I am running for reelection and that's where my efforts have been."

Kline added: "I think we're at the point in the cycle where it's probably helpful for those people who are thinking about running for the Senate for me to take my name off the table, so they can start mounting their efforts."

Other potential challengers for Franken include Rep. Erik Paulsen (R-Minn.) and  state Sen. Julie Rosen. But Franken has pretty good personal approval ratings in Minnesota.
