Barbara Bush: Jeb shouldn’t run for president

April 25, 2013

If Jeb Bush runs for president in 2016, he'll find himself going against the wishes of his own mother.

"There are other people out there that are very qualified, and we've had enough Bushes," former first lady Barbara Bush told NBC's "Today," adding that she doesn't think her son, the former Florida governor, will make a bid.

But, she said, it's not because Jeb Bush would not be the best candidate. "He's by far the best qualified man, but no, I really don't" want to see him run, she said.

Former first lady Laura Bush took a more optimistic view about the prospect of a Jeb Bush presidential campaign.

"Sure, he'd be terrific, he'd be a wonderful president," said Laura Bush. "But who knows? We don't know, and we're just letting him decide."

The Bush women sat down with "Today" in Dallas ahead of the planned dedication later Thursday of George W. Bush's presidential library.
