PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Maybe that drink can happen after all.
Here in the town famous for being the epicenter of the family feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) responded Monday to a joke President Obama told at Saturday night's White House Correspondents' Association Dinner about not wanting to get a drink with the Republican leader.
After recalling his recent dinner with Senate Republicans, part of his so-called "charm offensive," Obama said he still hears complaints that he doesn't spend enough time with lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
"Of course, even after I've done all this, some folks still don’t think I spend enough time with Congress. 'Why don’t you get a drink with Mitch McConnell?' they ask. "Really? Why don’t you get a drink with Mitch McConnell?" Obama jested, to rousing applause from the audience.
During an appearance Monday before the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, McConnell responded to Obama's dig: "I'm shocked. He's obviously not seeing my soft side."
Later, McConnell tweeted a picture of himself, a beer, and an empty chair with a glass of red wine in front of it. He even copied Clint Eastwood on the tweet:
