Mark Sanford takes direct approach in new ad

With less than a week left until the special election for South Carolina's 1st District, former governor Mark Sanford is making a personal appeal. Speaking from his Beaufort County farm, Sanford invokes Nancy Pelosi and the national battle for fiscal restraint.

"I’ve fought hard over the years to make South Carolina a better place to call home," he says. "But those efforts pale now against the larger battle for the direction of our country. Maybe that’s why Nancy Pelosi and allies have spent more than a million dollars to defeat me."

On Tuesday, a Democratic super PAC released an ad directly attacking Sanford for his infidelity. While Pelosi (D-Calif.), the House minority leader, supports the group and its goal of giving Democrats a majority in the House, she does not have a role in running it.

Sanford continues: "But this contest is bigger than them or me. It’s about two different visions of how we restore America and rein in Washington spending. We have to get this right."
