MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Back in Washington, President Obama grapples with real-world national security crises. But here in North Carolina on Thursday, Obama delighted in seeing the heroine of make-believe catastrophes.
Among the several hundred students, educators and political supporters who packed into a hot and steamy gymnasium for Obama’s speech here was actress Claire Danes, who stars in the television drama “Homeland.”
Danes, who plays a Central Intelligence Agency officer with bipolar disease, sat in the front row of a VIP section with her husband, British actor Hugh Dancy. Danes has been in nearby Charlotte shooting Season 3 of the hit Showtime drama and came to Mooresville Middle School to attend the president's speech.
Following his address, Obama spotted Danes on the rope line, and he kissed her on the cheek, according to two reporters who were at the scene.
Obama is an avowed fan of “Homeland.” Last year, actor Damian Lewis, who plays congressman and retired U.S. Marine sergeant Nicholas Brody on the show, told the Associated Press that the president is a big fan.
“Not only has Obama been watching it but his aides have been calling up going, ’We need to see it,”’ Lewis told the news wire service. “So he’s been getting entire state departments, top of the U.S. government, asking to see it because their boss watches it and they feel they need to know what their boss has been watching.”
