DNC will vote on resolution calling for Filner’s resignation

August 20, 2013

The Democratic National Committee will vote this week on a resolution calling on San Diego Mayor Bob Filner (D) to resign, Post Politics has confirmed.

If Filner doesn't resign, the resolution says the party will support recall efforts against him.

Despite more than a dozen women coming forward to accuse Filner of sexual harassment, the mayor has declined to heed repeated calls for his resignation and instead signed up for a behavioral therapy program, which he recently completed.

The official resolution from his party would be the next in a long line of efforts to get him to step aside.

The news was first reported by CNN's Mark Preston.

"We expect a resolution to be voted on and pass calling on Mayor Filner to resign when the DNC meets in Arizona on Friday," said a DNC official. The meeting will take place in Scottsdale.

The effort is being spearheaded by DNC Vice Chairwoman Donna Brazile. DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has called for Filner to resign, as has House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Here's the text of the resolution:

WHEREAS, It has been, and always will be, a hallmark of the Democratic Party that everyone is equal and should be treated with respect.  The Democratic Party strongly believes that all Americans have the right to a harassment free workplace and wholeheartedly condemns any person who creates a hostile work place or engages in sexually harassing and humiliating behavior towards women or men; and

WHEREAS, San Diego city workers and constituents have come forward with substantial and credible evidence that Mayor Bob Filner has sexually harassed them. Mayor Filner has broken the pledge of the Democratic Party by this self-admitted “appalling” treatment of women.  His selective mistreatment of women who comprise half the population of San Diego and his abuse of the trust of the people who elected him, render his ability to govern and manage the affairs of the City impossible; and

WHEREAS, we cannot reassure voters that a vote for a Democrat is a vote for a champion for women unless Democrats walk our talk on equality and take firm action in accordance with our values and stand up for women by condemning his behavior and calling on him to immediately resign as Mayor of San Diego.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that as the party of women’s rights, the Democratic National Committee puts principle over partisanship, stands up for women, and calls upon San Diego Mayor Bob Filner to resign from public office and face the consequences of his actions, sparing his constituents the embarrassment and expense of a recall election; and

BE IT FURTHRER RESOLVED that if Bob Filner continues to refuse to resign, the DNC urges all San Diegans to support the recall.
