LePage denies saying Obama ‘hates white people’

August 20, 2013

Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) told local reporters that he never said President Obama "hates white people," as two anonymous Republicans have alleged.

The Portland Press-Herald cited two GOP lawmakers who said LePage made that remark at a fundraiser last week. Others present said they didn't hear such a remark.

Asked about it by local reporters Tuesday, LePage denied making the comment.

"No I never said that, and you guys are all about gossip," LePage said as he walked past reporters and waved his finger in front of the camera.

LePage has a history of making odd and controversial comments, including offering a crude metaphor involving Vaseline earlier this year. He is considered one of the most vulnerable incumbent governors up for reelection in 2014.
