Asked Sunday about recent comments from some Republican lawmakers on impeaching President Obama, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said, "I reject that kind of talk."

The Republican governor said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that although he disagrees with Obama's policies, "instead of talking about impeachment," he preferred "a legitimate debate." Talking points he said he'd rather discuss included healthcare and education, which he called "the next great civil rights fight."

"The reality is I didn't like it when the left spent eight years trying to delegitimize President Bush, calling to question his election," he said. "I don't think we should be doing that to President Obama. The reality is, one of the great things about this country is we do have a peaceful transfer of power."

Jindal's comments came after Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) said at a town hall on Wednesday that Obama was getting "perilously close" to an impeachable offense. Coburn's remark was the latest in a series of criticism from Republican congressmen who have called for the president's impeachment over the lingering, but false theory that Obama was not born in the United States.

Last Monday, Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (R-Mich.) said it would be a "dream come true" to oust the president and earlier this month, Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Tex.) alleged that the House had enough votes to make impeachment a reality.

To this, Jindal maintained his disapproval.

"Let's not talk impeachment," he said. "Let's talk about policies we disagree with."
