President Obama and his deputies will launch a broad public offensive Tuesday encouraging Americans to sign up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act, hoping to boost awareness of the law on the day it enters a critical stage.
Oct. 1 marks the first day uninsured Americans can take advantage of state and federal marketplaces across the country to enroll for plans that will take effect in January; even as the ongoing budget battle has triggered a partial government shutdown. the administration is moving forward with implementation of the law better known as Obamacare.
At 12:10 p.m. Obama will meet in the Oval Office "with Americans who will benefit from the opening of these Marketplaces and being able to comparison shop for the health plans that best fit their needs or their budgets," according to a document provided by the White House.
Other senior Obama officials will deliver targeted messages through the media to reach key audiences that could broaden the insurance pool by bringing more young, healthy Americans into the system. An interview with Vice President Biden "will air on over 450 domestic college radio stations in key states and markets across the country," the White House said, while the first lady has penned an editorial focused on women and mothers that will run Tuesday on Yahoo! Shine, a women's lifestyle Web site.
Throughout the day, White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and Health and Human Services Department officials will conduct interviews with African American radio shows, including the Tom Joyner Morning Show, the Al Sharpton Show, the Yolanda Adams Morning Show, Sway on Sirius HM, the Russ Parr Morning Show, Rickey Smiley Morning Show, and the Joe Madison Show. African Americans rank as one of the top groups targeted for enrollment, since they are disproportionately uninsured.
