Tea party groups split in Nebraska Senate race

Tea party groups are offering a split verdict in the Nebraska Senate race.

FreedomWorks just announced that it is backing former state treasurer Shane Osborn in the Republican primary, after the Club for Growth and Senate Conservatives Fund previously announced that they'll back Midland University President Ben Sasse.

These groups have often been on the same page in certain races — they have all endorsed Sen. Thad Cochran's (R-Miss.) primary opponent, Chris McDaniel, for example — but there are also times when they don't join forces.

The groups backing Sasse, notably, have spent more money on GOP primaries in recent years.

The Republican primary in Nebraska is very likely to determine the successor to retiring Sen. Mike Johnanns (R-Neb.). The seat is not a top target for Democrats.

Other GOP candidates include attorney Bart McLeay.
