Ex-Virginia governor candidate Creigh Deeds seriously injured in assault, son dead

Update 12:32 p.m.: Police have confirmed the individual who died is Deed's 24-year-old son, Gus Deeds, who first responders were unable to save from a gunshot wound. They would not say what the sequence of events was, but they did say they are not seeking any suspects. They said Creigh Deeds was stabbed multiple times in the face and upper torso.

Former Virginia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Creigh Deeds sustained serious injuries during an assault Tuesday morning and another person in his home is dead, according to Virginia state police.

Deeds, a state senator, has been taken to UVA Hospital in Charlottesville.

The police say a second individual at the home was killed. They did not identify the person.

Deeds lost the 2009 gubernatorial race to now-Gov. Bob McDonnell (R).
