Montana governor could appoint Baucus replacement Friday

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock (D) will hold a news conference on Friday, at which he could address who he'll appoint to replace Max Baucus (D-Mont.) in the Senate.

Baucus was confirmed Thursday as ambassador to China, leaving a vacancy that Bullock will fill. A release from Bullock's office says the news conference will be held at noon Eastern time in the Governor’s Reception Room at the Montana State Capitol.

It did not say whether the news conference would address the appointment, and aides declined to say what would be discussed.

Bullock's lieutenant governor, John Walsh, is considered the odds-on favorite for that endorsement.

Walsh is currently running for a full term, which is up for grabs in November. Freshman Rep. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) is also running and is considered the favorite for the full term.
