House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, in an interview with NowThis News's Ashley Codianni, sharply criticized the Olympic Committee for selecting Sochi as the site of the 2014 Olympic games, citing Russia's record on gay rights.

"The Olympic Committee has never been one concerned about human rights," Pelosi said. "I think this was a very bad choice."

Russia's 2013 law banning gay "propaganda" to minors has brought heavy criticism and protests ahead of the Olympics.

"It's like going into ancient history. The whole world has moved to a different place," Pelosi said. "That this should even be an issue speaks to the inappropriateness of Russia being the site for the Winter Olympics," said Pelosi.

The idea that "the whole world" is more friendly to gays than Russia isn't exactly backed up by data; here's a map from the WorldViews blog of the countries where homosexuality is criminalized.
