Al Gore endorses former aide McGinty for Pennsylvania governor

February 20, 2014

Democrat Katie McGinty landed a big-name supporter Thursday in her campaign for governor of Pennsylvania: Former vice president Al Gore.

"I strongly endorse Katie McGinty for governor," Gore said in a statement distributed by McGinty's campaign. "She shares my belief that we can build a better country and improve the lives of hard-working families. Katie has always viewed environmental challenges as economic opportunities."

McGinty is part of a crowded field of Democrats vying for a chance to take on Republican Tom Corbett, the country's most vulnerable governor. She's a former aide to Gore, having worked on his presidential campaign and in his Senate office. McGinty also worked in the administration of former governor Ed Rendell (D).

Other Democratic candidates include Rep. Allyson Schwartz, Treasurer Rob McCord, and former state revenue secretary Tom Wolf. Former state auditor general Jack Wagner is reportedly circulating nominating petitions for the primary, adding to an already packed field.

Democratic voters will choose their nominee on May 20.
