Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) raised almost $1.4 million during the first three months of the year, the largest quarterly fundraising total he has ever posted since being elected to Congress.

Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, ended March with more than $4 million in the bank, his campaign said. He's expected to cruise to reelection this fall.

The 2012 vice presidential nominee is one of the most closely-watched figures in the Republican Party. There's lots of uncertainty about what Ryan will do next: Does he want to be president? Or become House speaker? Something else? Some Republicans believe his preference is to chair the powerful Ways and Means Committee.
