The National Republican Senatorial Campaign is hitting the TV airwaves in the Georgia Senate race beginning next week, marking its first flight up on the air in the 2014 election.
According to Democrats and Republicans tracking the ad war, the NRSC has reserved $2.6 million worth of air time in the pricey Atlanta media market from Aug. 12 until Sept. 15.
Georgia is a key state for Republicans to hold as they battle for the Senate majority. Businessman David Perdue, who has reached into his own pockets to help fund his campaign, won the GOP nomination in a runoff on July 22. He faces Democrat Michelle Nunn, a philanthropist and the daughter of former senator Sam Nunn (D). Early polls show a competitive race.
Nunn's campaign has been put on defense in recent days by a National Review report last week detailing an internal campaign document not meant for public consumption. In it, her strategists openly discuss her potential vulnerabilities. The conservative super PAC Ending Spending Action Fund started hitting Nunn over the document in a TV ad last week.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee took flight in the Arkansas Senate race Tuesday with an ad that is part of a $3.6 million buy. Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) is one of the most vulnerable Democrats facing reelection. But polls show he is holding his own against Rep. Tom Cotton (R).
Both the DSCC and NRSC have reserved millions of dollars in post-Labor Day air time in key races. Reserves are subject to change.
Republicans need to pick up six seats to win back the majority.
