Cellular South CEO pans AT&T, T-Mobile merger

Cellular South CEO Hu Meena has come out strongly against the proposed merger between AT&T and T-Mobile, saying that the deal would hurt the wireless industry.

“Over the past several weeks, we have carefully reviewed this proposed transaction,” Meena said in a press release. “We can find nothing good about it.”

“It’s bad for consumers. It’s bad for jobs. It’s bad for competition,” he said.

The CEO was unanimously elected as the president of the Rural Cellular Association on Tuesday. The RCA represents wireless telecommunications companies who serve rural areas.

Sprint, which joined the RCA on Tuesday, has also spoken out against the merger. The company’s chief executive Dan Hesse has said the deal would stifle innovation.

Meena has been raising concerns about a duopoly in the industry for years, even leaving CTIA-The Wireless Association because of what he saw as bias toward AT&T and Verizon.

In the release, Cellular South Vice President of Strategic Government Relations Eric Graham also criticized the deal, saying that it would take the industry back to 1983 and revive the “Ma Bell” monopoly.

Cellular South serves over 875,000 customers in the Southeastern United States.
