Major Metro disruptions this weekend

Metro has major work planned on some of its tracks this weekend, causing headaches for people depending on the rail system to get around. The transit authority is closing three stations and conducting work on the Green, Yellow and Orange lines to install new equipment and conduct repairs.

Green/Yellow lines:

• The Shaw, U Street and Columbia Heights stations will close Friday at 10 p.m. and remain closed until the system reopens Tuesday morning.

• Free shuttle buses will replace trains and run between the Mount Vernon Square and Georgia Avenue stations, making stops outside each of the closed stations. Metro advises riders who will be using the shuttle buses to expect 20 minutes of additional travel time.

• The last train will leave Greenbelt 30 minutes earlier than usual (at 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights/early the following morning and at 11 p.m. on Sunday and Monday nights)

. • There is no work scheduled for the Red Line so Metro recommends that as an alternative for some passengers who would normally take the Green Line.

Orange Line:

• Free shuttle buses will replace trains between the East Falls Church and West Falls Church stations. Metro advises riders who will be using the buses to expect 30 minutes of additional travel time.

• Both of those stations will remain open for transfers between trains and buses.

• The last train will leave Vienna 17 minutes earlier than usual (at 2:08 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights/early the following morning and at 11:08 p.m. on Sunday and Monday)

• Trains will run every 20 minutes between the Vienna and West Falls Church stations and share a single track.

Sunday note: Metro will open an hour early (at 6 a.m.) on Sunday for the Army 10-Miler. The buses shuttling passengers around the closed stations will also begin service at 6 a.m.
