Two people died after an incident beneath the Key Bridge in Georgetown Friday evening:one a man who may have plunged from the span, and the other a U.S. Park Police officer who was sent to his aid.
The officer was identified as Sgt. Michael Boehm. Sgt. David Schlosser a Park Police spokesman said he had been an officer for 19 years. After collapsing he was taken to Georgetown University Hospital where he died, Schlosser said.
Boehm was one of many police and rescue personnel sent to the District end of the bridge after a man was found critically injured on the towpath that runs underneath.
It was not immediately clear Friday evening how the man on the towpath was injured. However officials said they were investigating whether he had plunged from the bridge. Officer Hugh Carew, a D.C. police spokesman said the man was taken to a hospital where he died. The man was not identified.
