A 9-year-old boy was taken Thursday morning from a Landover area elementary school by his mother, who has no custodial rights, and authorities issued an Amber Alert, Prince George’s County officials said.

Silvia Guadalupe Garcia picked up her son, Wilbert Caceres Garcia, from Dodge Park Elementary School just before 8 a.m., county police and school officials said. Officials discovered at the end of the day that Garcia had no custodial rights and should not have been allowed to take the child. An Amber Alert was issued.

Officials were investigating how Garcia was allowed to take the child without parental custody, said Briant Coleman, a spokesman for the school system.

“We are working with the local police department to investigate this incident,” Coleman said. “We need the public’s help in finding Wilbert. We will not rest until he is safely returned to his family.”

The pair was last seen at 7:50 a.m. in a black Mercedes 190 Class with Maryland license plates. Silvia Garcia is described as a 36-year-old Hispanic female with black hair, 5’2” tall about 130 lbs. Wilbert is described as 4’ tall and 80 lbs. with black hair and brown eyes.
