Appeals court dismisses Va. challenge to federal health-care law

A federal appeals court unanimously turned back a challenge by Virginia to the 2010 health-care law Thursday, ruling that the state lacks standing to challenge the law’s mandate that virtually all Americans obtain health insurance or pay a fine.

In a 2-1 vote, the panel of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond also dismissed a separate challenge brought by a college in Virginia, Liberty University.
