Baby killed; mother, child injured in Laurel crash

An infant was killed and a woman and another child injured after a car apparently backed into them in the Laurel area Friday morning, police said.

Authorities said the incident occurred about 9 a.m. in the 8300 block of Montpelier Drive. Cpl. Larry Johnson, a Prince George's County police spokesman, said preliminary information from suggests someone pulled a vehicle into a driveway but forgot to put it in park, and that vehicle "drifted back" into a mother and her two children.

An infant child was killed, Johnson said, and the mother and another child were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Prince George's County fire officials said the infant -- who was initially taken to the hospital in critical condition -- was 6 months old, and the other child was three.

It remains unclear who had driven the vehicle into the driveway. Johnson said another police spokesperson was en route to the scene to get more information
