Residents who live in the apartments above the restaurant flocked to the street as five hook-and-ladder trucks from D.C. Fire arrived at 3217 Mt. Pleasant St. NW at approximately 7:45 a.m.
Firefighters broke the first and second story windows with an axe. The fire was contained to the first floor and extinguished.
Tom Dooley, a 28-year-old photographer who lives above the restaurant, said, “I was in the shower and smelled smoke and then I heard someone knocking on my door.” His neighbor called 911 and the trucks arrived minutes later.
One resident lamented, “ I should have had rental insurance.”
D.C. Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
