Taxicabs in Washington will begin charging an extra $1 fuel surcharge for rides within the District of Columbia today.
Mayor Vincent Gray announced Saturday that he has signed an executive order authorizing the surcharge. The surcharge will last through July 25, unless it is repealed sooner by the D.C. Taxicab Commission.
A statement from Gray’s office says his order follows a recommendation by the Taxicab Commission to offset the rising price of fuel in the Washington area.
The surcharge won’t apply to taxi fares that cross the borders into Maryland or Virginia.
