Driver dies in Fairfax crash

March 29, 2011

A driver was killed Tuesday in the Hybla Valley area of Fairfax County when a vehicle left the road, smashed into a tree and caught fire, Fairfax County police said.

Investigators think a vehicle was speeding southbound down a hill on Harrison Lane about 4:30 p.m.and couldn’t make a 90-degree left turn onto Lockheed Boulevard, said Officer Don Gotthardt, a spokesman. The vehicle careened into Huntley Meadows Park and crashed into a tree, igniting a fire.

Several witnesses tried to rescue the driver from the vehicle, but it was engulfed in flames, and the driver died at the scene, Gotthardt said. Police are awaiting an autopsy to determine the driver’s identity, age and gender, he said.

The road was closed for several hours as police investigated.
