Prince George's County firefighters helped four people to safety after a blaze broke out in a District Heights apartment building Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
Emergency responders were called to the three-story building in the 6800 block of Walker Mill Road just before 1 p.m. for a report of a fire with people possibly trapped, authorities said. They arrived to find heavy fire coming from a top floor unit; four residents had been forced to retreat to second-floor rear balconies to escape the heat and smoke, authorities said.
Firefighters used ground ladders to help the residents down. They extinguished the blaze in about 40 minutes, authorities said. No one was hurt, but residents of the apartment building likely will be displaced, authorities said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
