One killed as huge tree crashes onto car in Great Falls

A huge tree fell on a car Tuesday evening in the Great Falls area of Fairfax County, causing one death, county police said.

The tree, estimated to be about 100 feet fall and to weigh about 40 tons, toppled about 6:45 p.m. in the 9900 block of Georgetown Pike, authorities said. It remained on the crushed vehicle through the early evening, preventing emergency personnel from determining who was inside, a police spokeswoman said. She said it was not clear why the tree fell.

Mary Ann Jennings, director of the police public information office, said late Tuesday night that the driver, the only occupant of the car, was killed. The victim was not immediately identified.

Part of the tree trunk resting on the car appeared to be about five feet in diameter. It also appeared that the tree might have been dead or diseased.

Jennings said an arborist wants a second tree to be removed near the scene of the fatality. She said the work could affect traffic, but that police will be ready to help if needed.
