Lincoln Memorial blacked out on Civil War anniversary

Lights went out Tuesday night at the Lincoln Memorial and nearby areas after an electrical cable was apparently damaged, the National Park Service said.

The Korean War Memorial and the plaza in front of the Lincoln Memorial were also affected by the blackout, said Park Service spokesman Bill Line.

He said he understood that a cable had been cut that supplies power to part of the western end of the Mall. The nearby Vietnam Veterans memorial was unaffected, he said.

Pepco crews were working to restore power and U.S. Park Police officers were sent to the area to ensure visitor safety, Line said.

There was no indication that the blackout at the Lincoln Memorial was connected in any way to Tuesday’s 150th anniversary of the event that started the Civil War.
