A man threatening suicide barricaded himself inside his high-rise apartment Thursday in Fairfax County and kept a stand off with police for nearly six hours, officials said.
County police were called by a counselor to respond to a patient on the eighth floor of the Skyline Plaza building in the 3700 block of South George Mason Drive about 4:15 p.m., said Officer Bud Walker, a spokesman. There were reports the situation forced a lock down on the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College, located next door, Alexandria police officials said.
No injuries were reported and the incident ended about 10 p.m.,when the man climbed down from his balcony and broke into an apartment below him, where officers were waiting, police said. Some floors of the apartment were evacuated.
Police had not searched his apartment late Thursday and were not sure if the man had a gun inside.
