Mega Millions winner in Maryland still unknown

The owner of a winning Mega Millions ticket sold last week in Maryland has not yet come forward to claim the prize despite the “rumor of the day,” lottery officials said in a Thursday press conference.

Mirlande Wilson, a McDonald’s employee, was part of a ticket pool with her co-workers at the Baltimore area restaurant. Wilson acknowledged that she did participate in the group, but bought the winning ticket separately with her own money.

On Wednesday, she held a press conference with her attorney Edward Smith Jr., who told the media that he had not seen the winning ticket but asked the Wilson and her family be left alone as she had intended to be an anonymous winner.

Stephen L. Martino, director of the Maryland State Lottery Agency, did not talk specifically about Wilson’s claim at Thursday’s press conference. Officials said if a group purchases tickets together, all the members must come in together to claim their share of the winnings.
