Overnight fires cause extensive damage in College Park

Prince George’s County police are investigating two separate fires that broke out in College Park Sunday night, causing significant damage, injuring two firefighters and displacing one family.

The first blaze erupted shortly after 10 p.m., in the first floor of a home in the 7300 block of Baylor Avenue. It took approximately 30 minutes to put out the fire, Prince George’s fire officials said.

Two firefighters sustained minor burns and were transported to the burn unit at Washington Hospital Center for treatment. A resident of the home also suffered a minor burn while exiting the home, but did not go to the hospital.

The family has been displaced, and officials said the fire caused an estimated $175,000 in property damage.

Around 11 p.m., firefighters responded to a second fire in College Park, at a car dealership in the 9300 block of Baltimore Avenue. The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes, officials said. No injuries were reported, but there was an estimated $100,000 in property damage.

The causes of both fires remain under investigation.
