The suspicious package found near the Washington Navy Yard Metro station has been cleared by police. Authorities said it was an item in a trash can, but it didn’t pose any danger.
D.C. police and fire department officials were investigating a suspicious package Wednesday afternoon near the Washington Navy Yard Metro station in Southeast Washington.
Investigators were called to the area near the 200 block of M Street and the 1100 block of New Jersey Avenue about 4:15 p.m., said Officer Paul Metcalf, a police spokesman. Authorities have shut down M Street between 1st and 3rd streets, said Pete Piringer,a fire department spokesman.
Metro spokeswoman Cathy Asato said the New Jersey Avenue entrance was closed but that the station was still serving riders.
It was not clear what kind of package it was.
