Shop till you drop — and do it tax free in Maryland and Virginia.
Both states have announced suspensions of the sales tax for people purchasing certain goods during parts of August.
“Shop Maryland” will allow shoppers to forgo Maryland’s 6 percent sales tax on purchases of qualifying apparel and footwear retailing for $100 or less. It runs from Aug. 14 to 20. See a list of items that qualify here.
Virginia is running a tax holiday on school supplies from Aug. 5 to 7. Shoppers can buy certain school supplies selling for $20 or less per item and footwear that retails for less than $100 without paying tax. To see which items qualify, visit the Virginia Department of Taxation Web site.
