Supporters of the Army private suspected of leaking confidential military documents to the WikiLeaks website plan to rally at the Virginia brig where he is being held.
Hundreds of supporters are expected to rally Sunday in Quantico, where Private Bradley Manning has been held as he awaits trial. Among those expected to attend are Daniel Ellsberg, the former military analyst who in 1971 leaked the Pentagon Papers, and retired U.S. Army Col. Mary Ann Wright, a critic of the Iraq war.
Manning is being held in solitary confinement for all but an hour every day. He is given a suicide-proof smock to wear to bed, and is stripped naked each night. His lawyer has condemned the treatment, and P.J. Crowley resigned as State Department spokesman after calling the treatment “ridiculous” and “stupid.”
