A waterspout was confirmed in Southern Maryland just before 6 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.
The waterspout — which is essentially a tornado over water — was reported over the Patuxent River near Benedict in Calvert County. No damage was immediately reported.
The weather service issued a tornado warning for eastern Charles County in southern Maryland, along with St. Mary’s County, southeastern Prince George’s County and western Calvert County until 6:30 p.m.
The weather service advises that anyone near a tornado warning area should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, and avoid windows.
