Unsafe trees to be removed in Great Falls

Fifty-nine trees that pose safety risks to drivers will be removed from the Great Falls area starting Monday, nearly one month after a decayed oak toppled and killed a Great Falls man as he was driving, officials said.

The death of 64-year-old Albert Carl Roeth III while he was driving his 2008 Mercedes CL600 on Georgetown Pike July 17 brought renewed attention to potentially unsafe trees in the area. Fairfax County officials surveyed trees in Great Falls, designating the 59 for removal, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

VDOT said the removal will take about three weeks, and will target 25 trees along River Bend Road, 15 trees along Browns Mill Road west of Difficult Run, seven trees along Beach Mill Road, six trees along Georgetown Pike, four trees along Walker Road, and two trees along Utterback Store Road.

Two white oaks at the corner of Georgetown Pike and Walker Road that some residents have advocated removing are not considered unsafe and are not scheduled to be removed, officials said. They said an arborist will inspect the trees over the next few weeks.
