It looks like Costco will come to Wheaton after all.
The Montgomery County Council on Monday defeated a proposal by a vote of 6 to 3 that would have blocked the county from giving millions in funding to shopping mall giant Westfield to help bring the big box store to Wheaton.
The vote is a significant victory for County Executive Isiah Leggett who had lobbied hard to give Westfield $4 million over two years as part of the deal. The incentive plan raised eyebrows in some quarters because it came at when the county faces a $300 million budget shortfall.
In April, it appeared the deal was in jeopardy when a majority of council members indicated they would not support the deal.
