Making the most of your entire college experience

This week I went to Centreville High to speak with a group of students involved with Fairfax County’s College Partnership Program. During the closing question-and-answer session, one of the students asked what a typical college schedule is like — but that’s something I know nothing about.
In my four years at Georgetown, everybody in my circle was, for the most part, an athlete — and that’s something I sometimes regret now. Sure, I tried to make as many connections as I could through athletics, and I made “friendships” with classmates that lasted up until the final exam. But now that I am without a “team” to fall back on, and I see the power of networking, I find myself wondering what I could have changed along the way.

Where are they now: Ty Lawson, Roy Hibbert, Greivis Vasquez and more
Many players from our area take their skills to play in college, some to the pros. These kids are the same kids that you grew up with and quite likely dominated your high school team. Some will forget about these guys, but others ask, “Where are they now?” We have the answers.
Clinton native Ty Lawson, who played two seasons at McNamara before transferring to Oak Hill and going on to North Carolina then the NBA, sparked the Nuggets to a 113-109 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday with 27 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. The win snapped Denver’s five-game losing streak. Lawson, meantime, is averaging 15.8 points and 6.5 assists.

Earlier in the week, Hibbert was named to the Eastern Conference all-star team as a reserve by coaches. He is averaging 13.3 points and 9.6 rebounds.
Michael Beasley, a Frederick native whose high school career included stops at Bowie and Riverdale Baptist (to name two of more than a few), scored 20 points and had four rebounds in a 104-97 loss to Dallas on Friday. Beasley is averaging 13.7 points and 5.9 rebounds.
New Orleans guard Greivis Vasquez (Montrose Christian) posted a double-double to help the Hornets snap an eight-game losing streak Monday night. Vasquez, who also starred at the University of Maryland, had 12 points and 10 assists to go with four rebounds in an 86-80 win over Utah.

Spalding graduate Rudy Gay (right) continues to lead Memphis in scoring at 18.6 points per game (to go along with 6.5 rebounds), Memphis (14-14) is currently just outside the top eight in the Western Conference playoff race, and its 98-88 loss Sunday to the Jazz didn’t help things, despite Gay’s team-high 22 points and 6 rebounds.

When trying to figure out just how many tickets could be sold for Sunday night’s game between top-ranked Paul VI Catholic and second-ranked Gonzaga, a tricky question had to be answered: How many seats needed to be saved for college coaches?
