Gonzaga, Crime Stopper, defending state champs headline event

Former Gonzaga and Georgetown standout Mark Tillmon has organized a quadruple header next season at features his alma mater against one of the region’s most exciting players and also matches the defending state champions for the biggest schools in Maryland and Virginia.

The feature game of the MLK Hoopfest Showcase matches Gonzaga against Maryland 4A finalist Patterson, led by rising junior guard Aquille Carr. Just 5 feet 7, Carr plays much larger and goes by the nickname Crime Stopper – because when he plays, everyone comes to watch and crime stops.

“I know how good he is,” Tillmon said. “I saw him three times last week.”

The event’s other marquee game has Maryland 4A defending champion North Point facing off against Virginia AAA defending champion I.C. Norcom.

Other matchups are Sidwell Friends against T.C. Williams and Coolidge against Phoebus.

The games will be played Jan. 16 at American University’s Bender Arena.

Tillmon is looking for a title sponsor for the event.
