Patricio Garino missed all of his six shots and went scoreless in 20 minutes as Montverde (Fla.) Academy bear La Lumiere of La Porte, Ind., 62-54, in the quarterfinals of the National High School Invitational on Thursday at Georgetown Prep.
The George Washington recruit, a 6-foot-6 senior, though, had five rebounds, three assists and three steals to help the Eagles advance to Friday’s semifinals against fourth-ranked Montrose Christian (21-2), which beat Ravenscroft (N.C.), 64-48.
“One thing is, Patricio is playing at about 60 percent unfortunately, he has horrible tendonitis,” Montverde Coach Kevin Boyle said. “The doctors already have told him he has to sit out six weeks when the tournament is over. He has barely been practicing.”
Normally, Boyle said, Garino is a solid shooter from the perimeter and guards the opponent’s best player, which he has not been able to do because his movement is limited.
“I think he’ll have a big impact at GW, in many ways,” Boyle said.
