Yorktown running back M.J. Stewart was on the field with his teammates at Maryland’s seven-on-seven passing camp this weekend when Terrapins Coach Randy Edsall approached.

Edsall introduced himself to the Patriots star, a rising junior who racked up 1,596 yards rushing and 26 total touchdowns last season, and told him he liked “the way you play football.”

Then, Edsall extended a scholarship offer, Stewart’s second such offer this summer. Virginia offered Stewart on June 12.

“I was shocked,” Stewart said.

It is still early in the recruiting process for Stewart, who after transferring from O’Connell became one of the Northern Region’s most versatile players. With game-breaking ability, Stewart also starred as a defensive back, leading Yorktown to the Northern Region championship game last season.

Stewart said he would be willing to play on either side of the ball in college.

“When you get to college, the coach is going to put you wherever they think you fit best,” Stewart said.

Stewart will visit North Carolina State this weekend, he said, and also plans on taking trips to Old Dominion, Richmond and Delaware, all schools that have expressed early interest in the 5-foot-10, 180-pound back.
