Getting a scholarship offer is nothing new for Sam Mustipher. Ever since the Good Counsel junior offensive lineman received his first offer from Illinois two years ago, a handful of big-time Football Bowl Subdivision programs have followed suit, from Maryland to Florida to Notre Dame.
But when Mustipher got a call Wednesday from Alabama Coach Nick Saban with another offer, the 6-foot-4, 270-pound lineman couldn’t help but be excited.
“That’s one of the biggest offers that I’ve received so far with just the amount of championships they’ve won and the amount of guys they’ve put into the NFL,” said the second team All-Met lineman, who now holds 25 offers. “Coach Saban just said keep in touch and try to get down to visit as soon as possible.”
On Sunday, junior defensive end Jesse Aniebonam fielded a similar call from Saban, bringing his total number of offers to 11, including Maryland, Ohio State and South Carolina.
“Sam has a 4.56 GPA and speaks French, so not only is he a great football player but he’s very intelligent and works hard off the field,” Falcons Coach Bob Milloy said. “With Jesse, he actually came to Good Counsel for basketball and now he’s become a big football prospect. We haven’t had Alabama offer many of our players in the past, so obviously, that’s pretty big.”
Milloy said that both Mustipher and Aniebonam have already earned invites to play in the Under Armour All-American Game and Army All-American Bowl next January.
Junior safety Kobie Walker is another player to watch from Good Counsel’s top-ranked team that went 11-1 and captured a fourth straight Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title this past fall.
The 6-4, 215-pound Walker landed a scholarship offer from Oklahoma State on Wednesday, adding to a handful of suitors that includes Boston College, N.C. State and Wisconsin.
