C.H. Flowers sophomore De’Janae Boykin continues rise as top prospect

March 26, 2013

Two months shy of her 16th birthday, C.H. Flowers sophomore De’Janae Boykin is already more than three years into the college basketball recruiting process.

Boykin, now listed at 6-foot-2 with long arms and a diverse skill set, was a 12-year-old playing with an under-16 AAU team at an October 2009 tournament in New Jersey when a Louisville assistant came through with a scholarship offer to get the ball rolling.

“I didn’t even really understand what it meant at the time,” said Boykin, who checked in at No. 4 on ESPNW’s most recent national list of 2015 recruits. “I was happy about it, but I didn’t really know anything about being recruited.”

Since then, Boykin, who transferred to the Springdale public school after splitting her freshman year between St. John’s and Riverdale Baptist, has continued to pile up college suitors.

By the time Boykin started high school, she had added an offer from West Virginia. Schools such as North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Duke and Georgetown joined the chase with offers, and Connecticut and Notre Dame have also shown interest, among others.

She’s taken unofficial visits to all the schools listed above that have offered and several in some cases. She attended both regular season meetings between Duke and North Carolina this season and was also in Morgantown, W.V., earlier this month when the Mountaineers hosted top-ranked Baylor.

Boykin said she’s planning trips to Connecticut and Notre Dame this summer in hopes of landing formal offers to add to her growing total.

“It’s kind of hard,” Boykin said. “When there [are] a lot of schools that like you and you like a lot of schools, you know making a decision is going to be tough.”

Boykin attracted a steady stream of major college coaches to C.H. Flowers games this winter after making the jump to her neighborhood school. In her first season with the Jaguars, she averaged 15.7 points with about eight rebounds per game and played an important role on defense in the team’s run to the Maryland 4A South final.

Flowers Coach Patrice Frazier-Watson has taken the lead handling communication with college coaches, collecting letters from suitors and keeping a log of the schools that have sent representatives to watch her play. Boykin said, at this point, she plans to stay at the school next year.

“That does a lot for our program,” Frazier-Watson said of the recruiting attention. “It allows other kids to be seen as well, especially when you’re talking about top Division I college coaches visiting our school. It’s a tremendous opportunity for all our kids and even the rest of the county, too.”

For now, Boykin has declined to single out any favorites at the next level. Her father, Jeff, said he’d like her to produce a list of serious contenders by the end of the summer to streamline the process.

Until then, Boykin will be plenty busy on the AAU circuit. After a long run with the Fairfax Stars, she joined the Hampton, Va.-based Boo Williams program last year, which requires her to spend many weekends during the spring and summer on the road.

“She wants to enjoy the process,” Jeff Boykin said late last week. “It won’t be quick. … She’ll keep playing and keep working. Coaches change, things change, so I told her not to really worry about it yet.”

NUMBER CRUNCH: 1.4

The amount of snow, in inches, measured at Reagan National Airport on Monday by 11 a.m. (Although the Capital Weather Gang’s Jason Samenow wondered if that reading was a bit low.) The late blast of wintery weather shuttered most of the area sports schedule. As of 11 p.m., only six scores had been reported to The Post with three of those taking place out of state in warmer climates.
