For most Good Counsel students, next week’s spring break will be a time to sleep in, relax and perhaps try to find sunnier skies down South at the beach.
For Sam Mustipher, one of the area’s most sought-after football recruits, the week off provides time to visit four of the many Division I college programs vying for his commitment.
Starting this weekend, the junior offensive lineman plans to drive up to Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Ohio State with hopes that the unofficial visits will help him trim down his list of 29 offers.
“I would like to narrow it down to a top 10 eventually, but I know there are a lot more visits I have to take,” Mustipher said in a Wednesday phone interview. “I’m just trying to get a feel for as many schools as possible and I’ll make my decision on my own time, so I’m not too pressed to announce a top 10 right now.”
While Mustipher has visited Ohio State twice and Notre Dame once, these will be his first trips to the Michigan and Northwestern campuses. In the coming months, the 6-foot-4, 270-pound lineman is thinking about visiting North Carolina and Clemson along with possible trips to Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Maryland, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Stanford.
“A lot of these schools are a ways out there, so it will take some considerable planning with my family to make those trips,” Mustipher said.
Come senior year, Mustipher said he plans to take all five of his official visits. Ideally, he’d like to make his final decision before the start of the fall season, but if not, he has a few other options in mind.
“With all the coaching changes that are likely to happen, I have a feeling I’m not going to be able to decide before the season,” Mustipher said. “I don’t believe I’ll wait until Signing Day, either. The thing is, this isn’t just a four-year deal; it’s a forty-year deal. That degree is the basis for the rest of your life. I want to make sure I get a feel for everything so I can make the right decision.”
Mustipher, along with teammate Jesse Aniebonam, has already been chosen to play in the Under Armour All-American Game in January. With several relatives near the game’s site in Florida, Mustipher mentioned that he could possibly announce during the contest.
As a second-team All-Met selection last fall, Mustipher helped the top-ranked Falcons rush for 2,374 yards and capture their fourth straight Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title
