Following an All-Met junior season, Potomac (Md.) guard Dion Wiley orally committed to the University of Maryland Friday.

Wiley said in a phone interview that the Terrapins led most of the way in his recruitment thanks to the personal efforts of Coach Mark Turgeon, who attended at least a half dozen Potomac games and spoke on the phone with the player nearly every weekend.

The 6-foot-4 shooting guard said he made his decision on Monday but waited until Friday morning to call Turgeon with the news. He named Florida and Miami as the runners-up on his wide-ranging list of suitors.

“Someone told me if the head coach isn’t after you, you don’t really mean that much to them,” Wiley said. “Coach Turgeon has been on me since Day 1, my 10th grade year. … I really did this because I feel comfortable.”

Rated the No. 3 shooting guard in his class nationally by ESPN.com, Wiley averaged 17.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 6.4 assists last season and led the Wolverines to 22 wins and a berth in the Maryland 3A title game.

He burst onto the recruiting scene last summer on the AAU circuit with Team Takeover, garnering attention for his outside shooting and a frame suited for the college game. (He averaged nearly three three-pointers per game during the high school season.)

Wiley attracted a list of suitors also included Georgetown, Virginia and Virginia Tech, locally. Florida and Indiana are among the schools that joined the mix since the end of the high school season.

But Maryland coaches made Wiley a priority, and their diligence paid off.

Potomac Coach Renard Johnson said Turgeon probably attended more of his team’s games than any other college coach, assistants included. (“He even gave me a couple coaching tips during games,” Johnson added.)

Wiley said he reached Turgeon by phone around 8:15 a.m. on Friday morning to offer his commitment. He won’t be able to make it official until the early signing period, which begins Nov. 14.

“His reaction was ‘I’m proud of you. Now let’s get it done,’” Wiley said.

Wiley becomes the second local recruit to orally commit to the Terrapins for the Class of 2014, joining O’Connell All-Met point guard Melo Trimble. He’s also close with incoming freshman point guard Roddy Peters (Suitland) but said those ties only played a minor role in his decision.

“The biggest factor is the way they recruited me,” Wiley said. “They let me know that I can come in as a freshman and make an impact.”

Wiley has led Team Takeover in scoring at 14.8 points so far during the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League season, converting 48 percent of his three-point attempts in 13 games.

The guard missed the most recent round of EYBL play with swollen knees, an injury he classified as “jumper’s knee” and doesn’t believe to be serious. He was not at full speed when he participated in the Mary Kline Classic last week but said he plans to play in next week’s NBPA Top 100 camp at the University of Virginia, wearing patella straps to ease the pain.
