Football rankings rollout: Nos. 13-10

August 22, 2013

Sophomore quarterback Devin Butler is back to lead No. 13 Douglass, which made it to the Maryland 2A state final last year (Mark Gail/The Washington Post).

13. DOUGLASS
2012 record: 12-2 (lost 30-12 to Middletown in Maryland 2A State finals)
Notable returners: DT Gary Gross, LB Malcolm McCoy, CB Devonta’ High, QB Devin Butler
Notable losses: WR Paul Harris, TE Tre’ Gibbons Hall, C James Fenwick, DE D’Sean Cummings, LB Matthew Paul, CB Demory Monroe, WR Devonte Williams
Games to Watch: vs. Wise (Sept. 7), at Gwynn Park (Sept. 21), at Potomac (Oct. 12)
Overview: Sophomore quarterback Devin Butler’s got a year in Coach J.C. Pinkney’s triple-option offense and a run to the state title game under his belt, and will lead an offense that returns four of its top five leading rushers from 2012. The Eagles will need that stability in the backfield, as they’ll have to retool at wide receiver after losing the speedy Devonte Williams and new Tennessee Volunteer Paul Harris to graduation. Douglass returns some major defensive cogs in Gross, McCoy, and High, and will reload on both sides of the ball from a powerful JV squad that went 10-0 in 2012.

12. HYLTON
2012 record: 10-3 (lost 21-14 to Ocean Lakes in the Virginia AAA Division 6 semifinals)
Notable returners: QB Travon McMillian, WR Terrin Allen-Neal
Notable losses: LB E.J. Levenberry, RB Joshua Ronan-Redfearn, OL Chasz Wright
Games to Watch: vs Stonewall Jackson (Sept. 6), at Battlefield (Oct. 4)
Overview: The Bulldogs return seven starters on defense — including their complete secondary and defense line units. On offense, dual-threat QB Travon McMillian (Va. Tech) thrived in Hylton’s spread attack, accounting for 28 total touchdowns. He’ll be looking for a new backfield mate after the graduation of leading rusher Josh Ronan-Redfearn (1,194 yards, 16 touchdowns); RBs Sam Thomas and Renardo Willis are the leading candidates to pick up carries. 6-foot-4 junior OL Matthew Burrell Jr. transferred in from Chancellor (Fredericksburg) this summer and should become an instant fixture up front. Coach Tony Lilly said junior WR Yanis N’Guetta “is having a big camp,” and could star in a receiving corps that also includes senior Terrin Allen-Neal (eight touchdowns) and sophomore Eric Kumah (18 catches).

11. LAKE BRADDOCK
2012 record:
8-3 (lost 20-13 to Oakton in Virginia AAA Northern Region Division 6 quarterfinals)
Notable returners: QB Caleb Henderson, WR A.J. Alexander, DL Dwight Lomax
Notable losses: RB/WR Aaron Hollins, DB Jason Hoskins
Games to Watch: at Stone Bridge (Sept. 6), vs. Westfield (Sept. 20), at West Potomac (Oct. 4)
Outlook: Expectations are high for the Bruins, who possess several offensive weapons, the most notable of which is the one-two punch of senior dual-threat QB Caleb Henderson (2,888 total yards, 28 total TDs and junior WR A.J. Alexander (75 catches, 741 yards). Henderson, a UNC commit, also has a dependable target in TE Ryan Antonellis. Defensively, Dwight Lomax has packed on 20 pounds of muscle to aid his move from LB to the defensive line. Along with these expectations comes a tough schedule, as the Bruins open against playoff contenders Robinson, Stone Bridge and Westfield.

10. GONZAGA
2012 record: 8-3 (lost 40-27 to DeMatha in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference semifinals)
Notable returners: WR/LB Jabari Greenwood, RB Robbie Walker, DB Miles Taylor
Notable losses: DB Devin Butler, DB Jaivon Gibbs
Games to Watch: at Good Counsel (Sept. 20), at DeMatha (Oct. 18), vs. St. John’s (Nov. 2)
Overview: In an effort to prepare for the gauntlet that is the WCAC, Gonzaga opens the season against three tough national opponents, including highly touted RB Elijah Hood and Charlotte Catholic on Saturday. The Eagles are equipped to handle the load of their schedule, starting with senior RB Robbie Walker. After rushing for 926 yards last season, the Ohio commit is poised to rack up plenty more as a rusher and slot receiver. Joining him on offense is wideout Jabari Greenwood, who earned offers from Maryland and Virginia following an impressive showing on the offseason circuit. On defense, Miles Taylor will be asked to pick up the slack in the secondary following the graduation of Devin Butler and Jaivon Gibbs.
