St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes forward Graham Guidry weighing college options

September 26, 2013

The St. Stephen’s/St.Agnes boys’ soccer team takes pride in having players with diverse skill sets, a roster full of athletes that don’t necessarily view soccer as their first sport at the school. But not Graham Guidry.

Soccer has always been front and center for the talented Saints’ forward, and this fall the versatile Guidry has fully arrived as one of the best players in the area. He scored four goals as a sophomore two years ago, followed by 20 as a junior last year. He already has 11 goals and five assists through eight matches this season, including two in Tuesday’s 3-1 win over then No.10 Georgetown Prep.

“We started off the season a little slow with a few ties, but I see the team getting better every week,” said Guidry, who has led the eighth-ranked Saints (6-0-2) to four straight wins.

Guidry has scored eight goals in the past three matches, including back-to-back hat tricks in wins over Bishop Ireton and Bullis. Although he has toggled back and forth from central midfield and forward since his sophomore season, Guidry has always had a scorer’s mentality and his maturity as a senior has allowed him to “convert more of my chances” around the net, he said.

Guidry is currently talking with five schools about playing at the next level — including N.C. State, George Washington, William & Mary, James Madison and Christopher Newport.

“I’m going to continue to improve,” Guidry said. “As of now, I’m uncommitted. I’m trying to keep my options open.”

The goals Tuesday against Georgetown Prep came after Guidry moved from forward back to center-mid after another player was injured, he said — and the scores were a product of “hard work” from his teammates. The second goal came after the defense won the ball and created a one-on-one opportunity between Guidry and Prep’s goalkeeper.

“We just have a great team that works hard, who believes in each other,” Guidry said. “I’ve had a team who has believed in me since my freshman year. They’ve supported me and believed in me, and that’s given me confidence to grow and get better.”

BREAKFAST LINKS

– The field hockey teams in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference continue to deal with a lack of resources this fall, including a shortage of referees and playing surfaces that some equate to “cow pastures.”

– Marcel Joly, the Forestville running back/defensive back/return man extraordinaire, considered a number of high level offers, but has committed to Iowa.

– Local volleyball powers Magruder and Sherwood are unafraid to think outside the box with scheduling, which was on full display last week.
