Dunbar standout London Freeland will make her second official visit to a Southeastern Conference school in as many months when she visits Tennessee this weekend.

Freeland, who dominated the DCIAA last year individually and capped a strong year off by helping the Crimson Tide girls win DCIAA and DCSAA outdoor track titles, visited Mississippi State last month. She currently holds additional scholarship offers from Notre Dame, Navy, North Carolina A&T, Tuskegee and North Dakota. She plans to make more visits in the coming months.

“When I go to these schools I look for if it’s going to fit me, is it going to be my type of environment,” Freeland said. “I feel I can [contribute to as a freshman runner] because of the type of person I am. I won’t stop working until I have reached the goal I have set for myself.”

One of Freeland’s priorities has been rehabilitating a strained groin, which she suffered near the end of last season. The injury kept her out of running for much of the summer – and being idle wasn’t what the active Freeland had in mind. She was expecting to compete in the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics at North Carolina A&T, but was forced to attend as a spectator instead. And she couldn’t compete for her academy team, New Wave Track Club, which marked the first time in nine years she wasn’t running full time during the summer.

“It was kind of hard, because I wanted to be out there competing,” Freeland said. “It’s healing. It actually feels much better than before.”

The remedy was physical therapy and short but intense workout sessions this fall, which includes sprints and weight training. She’s currently preparing for the indoor season, and is expected to once again be a force. As a junior she won indoor DCIAA and DCSAA titles in the 300 and 500 meter, and also took city crowns in the 800 and 1,600 meter. During the outdoor season, she captured DCIAA and DCSAA titles in the 200 and 300 meter, the 300-meter hurdles and took city titles in the 800 and 1,600 meter events.

Freeland  said she plans to make a college decision before February, and was intrigued with Mississippi State, she said.

“They have a nice facility. The first day that they offered me, they had my attention,” Freeland said. “College is on my mind. But my main goal is to accomplish what I have to accomplish in high school to get to that next stage of college.”

NUMBER CRUNCH: 9
