Capitol Christian G Essence Brown commits to Howard

October 24, 2013

Yet another member of a revamped Capitol Christian girls’ basketball team committed to play Division I basketball next season when Essence Brown pledged to Howard on a visit to the school last weekend.

“After the first day there, the coach and I had a conversation and I told her I belonged there,” Brown said. “Walking around the campus, I felt like it wasn’t the D.C. that I lived in, I felt like it was its own little house in the middle of D.C. It was a different atmosphere.”

Brown, who plans to major in sports management, said what really caught her attention was the  class she sat in on during her visit.

“It was a criminal justice class, and even though I don’t plan to major in criminal justice, I really paid attention to the teacher, and she was a really good teacher and it was a hands-on lesson,” Brown said. “She kind of sold (the school) to me. It was just a really good lesson.”

For those counting at home, Brown is already the third member of the overhauled Capitol Christian roster to secure a Division I future, joining fellow guards Breonn Hughey (Towson) and Auteonna Gilmore (Old Dominion). The school formerly known as Princeton Day is beginning to look like an overnight girls’ basketball powerhouse, with a coaching staff led by former H.D. Woodson coach Henry Anglin, and a roster loaded with talented transfers like Brown, who averaged just over 14 points per game at Coolidge last season.

“For me being on a team where there wasn’t as much talent and I had to do most of the work, a lot of weight is off my shoulders [at Capitol Christian],” Brown said. “We have point guards that do their job, shooting guards that do their job, people who run, people who play good defense, so I don’t have to do as much.”

Brown said she received interest from several other schools like Prairie View A&M and George Washington, and that she attended camps at Jacksonville and West Virginia. The 5-foot-8 guard said the choice between staying close to home and moving away for school was a “toss up,” but that she ultimately decided the pros of staying close to home outweighed the cons of familiarity.

“I felt like I’m going to have a really big fan base here playing for Howard. People are going to come watch, and people my age and below me can look up to me and see that I’m doing well,” Brown said. “There’s nothing better than that feeling.”

Brown said she hopes to compete for a starting spot right away in a rebuilding Howard program she believes is on the rise.

“The coaching staff, they made me feel like they really wanted to do something new with Howard’s program. They haven’t been too successful in the past, and I felt like they were really about to make a change,” she said. “They knew what they were doing, they knew exactly what their focus was, and they play my type of basketball: fast and powerful.”

WHAT TO WATCH:

Montgomery County girls’ tennis championships, 3 p.m.

Yes, it’s cold outside, but that won’t stop the top public school players in Montgomery County from duking it out for county supremacy.

Volleyball: Glenelg at Howard, 4:30 p.m.

If you’re unwilling to brave the outdoors, here’s a great alternative. The lone blemish on No. 8 Howard’s record this season is a five-set loss at Glenelg (11-1) way back on Sept. 16. The Lions (12-1) will look to turn the tables with the Howard County title on the line in today’s regular season finale in Ellicott City.
